Antiques and Art…
The rule of thumb is that anything 100 years or older is an “antique.” Items that are old, but not quite that old, are referred to as “vintage.” However, it’s not that simple. Some folks go by the old adage that any object 80 years of age and older is an antique. Of course as time moves on so does the age of the antique – hello Father Time! Whether age, beauty, rarity, condition, personal connection or unique feature, the reasons why we love antiques are many. Antique and vintage items are wonderful examples of human thought and endeavor representing various periods in history and many objects have lasted for generations! Each antique and vintage object has its own personal story. Who was its maker? How was it made? Where was it made? Who was its previous owner? Our goal is to identify unique objects from the past and help them on their journey to their next owner – and to future generations. Our finds come from a number of sources: Ocracoke island folks bring their consignments to the shop. We research and scour estate sales and auctions up and down the coasts of North and South Carolina. Whenever we can we strive to find old and unusual pieces in good to great condition. And wherever we can we try our mightiest to nail down the history of each piece so that we can pass this information on to you, our customers, so that you can share it with the next!
… and More!
The AND MORE includes cool stuff like hand-cast pewter wine bottle toppers, vintage Mason jar soap holders, Ocracoke seascape bell jars, octopus tea towels, TAZA Mexican chocolates, vintage soy candle teacups and Isadora’s hand-painted Okras on Ocracoke. That’s not counting our famous Dancing Kat and Butterfly weathervanes (*of which $3 from each purchase goes to fund OCRACATS, an island non-profit dedicated to caring for Ocracoke’s large feral cat population), Milk Street Soaps (made exclusively by Kim Meacham in Ocracoke) and our newest line, Swedish Dream Sea Salt Soaps, Sea Salt Candles and Sea Salt Hand Crème. We can also conjure up some cool vintage gift baskets with your favorite items from the shop – mix and match – there are all kinds of fits for various occasions and budgets!
